The purpose of this page is to collect images of all the extant Dark Elf figures in the history of Citadel Miniatures in rough chronological order by release date. In their earliest incarnations, Citadel Dark Elf miniatures owe a lot to traditional Dungeons & Dragons Drow- They are frequently painted with blue skin in early Citadel catalogue material and there is a higher percentage of female models in the Dark Elf line than any other, reflecting the matriarchal nature of Drow society.

The Dark Elf range was completely re-worked yet again for 6th edition warhammer with the release of the second Dark Elf Army Book. The range featured many elements sculpted by Chris Fitzpatrick, notably the Cold One Knights, Black Ark Corsairs, Witch Elves and Black Guard Of Naggaroth, plus most Special Character figures. While the range included models for almost all troop types (with dedicated Command figures for each unit type), there was a distinct paucity of generic character figures (no generic Noble or Highborn figures of any kind, apart from the Limited Edition Battle Standard Bearer originally sold with the Boxed Dark Elf army deal, and later through GW's "Skullz" sticker redemption program). The range did include multiple variant Assassin & Beastmaster models.

Citadel Dark Elf figures enter their next phase with the line of models sculpted by Bob Naismith for use with 3rd edition Warhammer. In accord with Citadel's general move towards creating a line of figures that you could build an army with rather than a loose conglomeration of figures largely intended for use with fantasy roleplaying games, the slottabased line of C09 Dark Elf figures is more regimented and standardized. There are Trooper models with Command options (Champion, Leader, Standard Bearer & Musician), as well as a complete line of Cavalry, Infantry, War Machines and some character models on monstrous mounts. Witch Elves become a distinct troop type in this era. The Crossbow has become the only available missile weapon. In accordance with the rules of 3rd edition Warhammer, Troops may be upgraded to Elite status, and may be given variant weapons, but there are no specialized Infantry units in the model range, apart from Witch Elves (so no Corsairs, Executioners or Black Guard). Some models in this range (notably the Soceress "Azireth Darkforce") were sculpted with variant heads, indicating that they may have been intended for the Citadel ADD range. The figure known as "Aldethar Brain-splitter" appeared with the rest of the range in the 1988 Citadel Catalogue and in various Mail Order Flyers and White Dwarf catalogue pages, but was inexplicably dropped from the range prior to the publication of the 1991 Citadel catalogue Volume 2.

=== Unreleased Dark Elf Warrior ===

This line (also sculpted by Bob Naismith) comprises 7 individually-named Cold One Riders riding slottabased 2-piece metal Cold Ones. The C13 mounted Dark Elf Hero/General figure was also later included as part of this range (without his Dragon Horse mount) as a Cold One Rider. These same Rider figures were also sold blistered with single-piece metal Elven Steeds (the same Elven Steeds that were sold with High/Wood Elves).

=== RR11 Slottabased Mengil Manhide's Manflayers ===

The first slottabased version of Mengil Manhide's Manflayers includes a Command group of four: Mengil, Ean Hawkbane (called Hawklord in some material) as unit Champion, and a male Standard Bearer & Musician. There are two different Trooper models, one male & one female. Originally, the slottabased Manflayers were sold in the same boxed format as the preslotta versions (with one command figure + 8 Troopers), but they were later sold as a complete unit of 12, featuring all 4 Command models and 4 each of both Troopers, packaged in a hard-shelled see-through plastic box. Command models were also sold unidentified in two-man blister packs as "Dark Elf Heroes" or "Dark Elf Command" on into the early days of 4th edition Warhammer.
+
Upon their original release (in conjuction with the Tears Of Isha campaign pack) Dark Riders had single-piece Champion & Standard Bearer models and no Musician. When the line was re-released for 6th edition Warhammer, the Champion & Standard Bearer were replaced by 2 multipurpose Command figures that could be assembled as either Champions, Standard Bearers or Musicians. The Repeater Crossbow that comes with each Trooper model was also redesigned, making it slightly smaller. Otherwise the individual (non-Command) Rider models were unchanged from late 5th edition until the present day.

=== Citadel TSR ADD68 Drow ===

During the mid-1980s, Citadel Miniatures briefly held the license from TSR to produce official miniatures for use with the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons fantasy roleplaying game. The Drow (ADD Dark Elf) figures for this line were sculpted by Bob Naismith and they are very similar to the line of Dark Elf figures he produced for 3rd edition Warhammer (the two ranges blend almost seamlessly). The ADD68 Drow range includes 5 different variants of 3 basic troop types: A standing male figure. a crouching male figure and a female figure. Excellent examples of this range may be found on Richard Scott's "Otherworld" website, which documents the complete Citadel ADD range:

The "Arcane Monstrosities" range includes a single Dark Elf figure mounted on a Giant War Eagle. The rider & mount were sculpted by Tony Ackland. The Dark Elf Rider figure bears little resemblance to other contemporary Dark Elf figures, and is frequently mistaken for a Wood Elf.

This figure was originally sold with both foot and mounted versions packaged together in a single blister pack. the foot & mounted versions were later split up and integrated into the regular Bob Naismith Dark Elf range for the Citadel 1991 Catalogue, Volume 2. The Dragon Horse mount vanished from the range and was only ever available in the original blister package.

This model was only briefly available through Citadel Mail Order and is very rare. The Mail Order Flyer through which it was sold depicts two variant crews. The second set of crew is even more rare, and may never have been actually released. At the point in time when it was released, there were no rules to accompany the Cold One Chariot.

The Temple Dog was a monstrous mount available to several different armies during 3rd edition Warhammer. The Temple Dog was sold blistered with one of three variant Riders, either a Samurai, a Hobgoblin, or a Dark Elf. The Dark Elf rider was sculpted by Aly Morrison, presaging the Marauder line of dark Elf figures.

The Citadel BC2 Monsters boxed set includes a single Dark Elf figure (called "Evil Dark Elf Captain"). The influence of D&D Drow can be seen again here, with a Dark Elf acting in an executive capacity over other monsters. The BC2 boxed set is a companion piece to the BC1 Adventurers boxed set. Both are intended for use with fantasy roleplaying games.

=== Talisman Dark Elves ===

The original (2nd edition) Talisman range includes a single metal Dark Elf Figure, that was originally released as part of the Talisman Dungeon expansion set and then later in blisters with other Talisman figures. The character is depicted with blue skin on the Talisman character card, again tying the concept more closely to D&D Drow.

For the third edition of Talisman, GW published updated character cards in the pages of White Dwarf magazine, including a Dark Elf taken from the Marauder MM70 Dark Elf range. The third edition Talisman expansion sets included two plastic Dark Elf figures, a Witch Elf (for the Talisman City Of Adventure expansion) and a Sorceress (for the Talisman Dragon's Tower expansion). Talisman City Of Adventure also includes a plastic Assassin model that is frequently mistaken for a Dark Elf, but this figure is intended to represent a human Assassin in the Talisman game. The plastic figures from the Talisman expansions were briefly available separate from their games as part of GW's short-lived "Toybox" line (boxed sets of plastic figures that were intended for sale in toystores and other retail channels apart from hobby stores).

=== Marauder MM-series Dark Elves ===

In the late 1980s/early 1990s, Marauder Miniatures existed as a distinct entity with its own lines of figures  (Although they were always owned and distributed by GW). A complete independant line of Dark Elf figures was available from Marauder, intended for use with 3rd edition Warhammer (essentially replacing the earlier Bob Naismith line of Dark Elf miniatures, although elements of both lines were briefly available on into 4th edition Warhammer, sometimes even blistered together). The Marauder line includes a Hydra, but the Hydra model was not then specific to the Dark Elf army. There are also several models in the range that were released but never catalogued.

=== Marauder MM-series Cavalry ===

Marauder Dark Elf Cavalry (both MM71 Doomdrakes and MM72 Doomsteeds) included a bewildering array of mix-and-match legs, torsos, right arms, mounts and ramage. The range is reasonably well-documented in the Marauder catalogue, but Torso variant F and the set of hands/crossbow that go with it are left out. This page displays images of all the variant components. A complete blister would include: A mount (either a Doomsteed or a Doomdrake), a set of legs, a torso (with head & left arm attached), a right arm (with weapon), a spear & saddlebag, a crossbow & quiver, a plastic Marauder Dark Elf shield and a base. Torso variants A & F do not have shield lugs and were not packaged with a shield. Torso variant F used the same repeater crossbow bit as Marauder MM73 Scout type C. The riders from this range were briefly packaged with plastic unarmored Empire horses (on which they didn't fit) at the beginning of 4th edition Warhammer.

The original 1995 versions were called the Black Guard of Naggaroth. These later versions were titled the Black Guard of Naggarond. Looking at the Games workshop 2008 catalogue, there appear to be only three variants of the Black Guard trooper, but two are not shown. The ones not shown are two part miniatures and are exactly the same as each other, except that the head and hair differ. The slottas for the single casting Black Guards are dated 1999, with the two not shown in the 2008 catalogue having the year 2000 on them. Also there appear to be three variants of Halberd with only two being shown in the catalogue.

These 2 figures were released, both in the original black & red Marauder blister packs and later in the Citadel 4th edition Warhammer green blister packs, but for some reason there is no catalogue reference to them. The figures included a generous amount of ramage (a bag of scrolls, a sheathed sword, Orc trophy heads and a staff with saddle bag). The MM74 Heroes were apparently only blistered with Cold Ones, never with the barded Dark Elf Doomsteed (although they both fit equally well on either mount).

When Citadel began producing plastic figures, they created a multi-purpose sprue with a Dark Elf, a Wood Elf, A Dwarf, an Orc, A Goblin and a Skaven. All of these figures came with 2 variant heads and some had variant weapons as well. They were intended for use with metal Command groups to build units quickly or to bulk out existing metal units.

=== Citadel/Marauder Dark Elves ===

The Dark Elf line was completely re-worked for 4th edition Warhammer and the release of the first Dark Elf Army book. The entire line was sculpted by Aly Morrison (some figures in conjunction with Colin Dixon). A prototype Dark Elf Army list was previously available in the 4th edition Warhammer boxed set (along with army lists for most other Warhammer races) that included rules & troop types extrapolated from 3rd edition Warhammer that were later dropped with the publication of the 4th edition Army Book. The Dark Elf army book included the background material (Malekith) and troop types that are familiar from the current edition Dark Elf Army Book. Several key units from the Dark Elf army list were unavailable throughout 4th edition Warhammer and into 5th edition Warhammer, notably Dark Riders, Shades/Scouts, Executioners and The War Hydra (although there were unreleased versions of many of these unit types). Dark Riders and the Cauldron Of Blood were released late in the life of 5th edition Warhammer, for use with the Tears Of Isha campaign Pack.

The Dark Eldar are essentially "Dark Elves In Space" and thus are included here for reference. One of the unreleased figures from the original Rogue Trader "First 40K Releases" Flyer is designated as "Dark Elf Space Trooper", but this is a Craftworld Eldar figure, not a Dark Eldar per se. The range was discontinued by GW but is still available from GW Mail Order. The range also includes an interesting selection of unreleased concept models, four by Gary Morley & seven by Chris Fitzpatrick (two of which are not Eldar, but human slave & prisoner models).

Warhammer 6th Edition Dark Elves

Dark Elf Warriors

Unreleased Dark Elf Warrior

Corsairs

Dark Riders

Upon their original release (in conjuction with the Tears Of Isha campaign pack) Dark Riders had single-piece Champion & Standard Bearer models and no Musician. When the line was re-released for 6th edition Warhammer, the Champion & Standard Bearer were replaced by 2 multipurpose Command figures that could be assembled as either Champions, Standard Bearers or Musicians. The Repeater Crossbow that comes with each Trooper model was also redesigned, making it slightly smaller. Dark Elf Black Guard Of Naggarond

Mengil Manhide's Manflayers

Chris Fitzpatrick sculpted a completely new range of Mengil Manhide's Manflayer models at roughly the same time as the rest of the Dark Elves before he left GW, but GW sat on the models and did not release them until the Storm Of Chaos campaign event, when they were finally released at roughly the same time as the Dark Elf Cult Of Slaanesh variant army list. This latest range includes Mengil himself, a Musician & Standard Bearer, plus three different variant troopers, all of them male. The Ean Hawkbane Champion character was dropped from the range for this release (purportedly killed and eaten by Mengil).
