Chaos Dwarfs - MM90 - Mini Me's

Introduction

This page is to centralise information on the MM90 'mini me' phenomena. It is known that most if not all of the Marauder MM90 Chaos Dwarfs are modelled as miniature versions of Chaos Warriors from Citadel's previous ranges. Both are popular ranges and this extra correspondence makes it a fun set to collect. However, there are some problems with this area of research:

1. This was never officially acknowledged by Marauder or Citadel so it remains an 'Easter egg' for collectors to stumble upon and there is no definitive list.

2. Citadel's Chaos Warriors are one of the most numerous and eclectic subjects which have been mixed and matched into various ranges over the decades.

It is hoped that this page will be a collaborative effort. Please feel free to add your own examples and comment on those suggested by other users. Please be aware that some of this will be highly speculative and that is a good thing. There will probably never be a definative list - perhaps future generations will one day wage war as to which Warrior MM90/5/a is based on but it is not this day.

Using the naming convention (and initially the photos) from the MM90 page on this site. Links are given to the phenomenal Stuff of Legends when known.

Working Hypothesis

  • /1-/4 are based on CH2/CH3/CH5
  • /5 are based on F5 Marauders
  • /6 are based Marauder’s own Warriors including unreleased/ uncatalogued figures.

I propose that 2c and 6a were accidently swapped for the catalogue photo...

2c appears as a sketch as one of the first 16 mini-me's

Major Update - January 2024

[Work in Progress] I'd somehow missed this post from 2016 on the Eldritch Epistles Website showing Aly Morrison's Marauder Miniatures sketchbook.

As well as including preliminary sketches of some of the MM90 range, it also includes " an amalgamation of Chaos Warrior images that Aly has cut out and stuck in his sketchbook", clearly labelled CHAOS DWARFS in handwriting. Both have major implications for this project:

  1. It confirms that the mini-minis were (mostly) modelled on existing Chaos Warriors (the cut-outs appear to come from the 1988 Citadel Catalogue). All but one of the pink highlighted warriors appear as their mini counterparts in the MM90 range.
    • "Slambo" is missing from the scrapbook despite 1b being one of the most iconic and most indisputable mini-me matches
    • The fifth warrior in the fourth row [Add pic!] is highlighted (which I assume means that it was selected to be modelled) but it's counterpart does not appear in MM90. I seems to have been replaced by an uncatalogued model as 2c.
    • The images in the scrapbook have tally marks (I-IIII). So far, I have no idea as to what they might mean - speculation welcome...
  2. The first 16 MM90 models (1-6, a-d) all exist as sketches, including 1b "Slambo" and 2c "Uncatalogued" which do not appear in the "scrap-book" selections.
    • The sketches are numbered 1-15, appearing over four separate pages but there appears to be no correlation with catalogue numbers.
    • 1b "Slambo" is once again an anomaly as he appears on a separate page and is not numbered.

Updated Hypothesis

  • /1-/4 are based on CH2/CH3/CH5 seems confirmed, perhaps all from the 1988 Catalogue (although 2c remains an anomaly as it appears to be based on an unreleased model not in the 1988 Catalogue).
  • None of the models from /5 & /6 appear in either the selection scrapbook nor as sketches. This suggests that the selection/ design process changed after the first sixteen models, and later models were chosen according to different criteria some time later. There is a strong possibility they are original sculpts not based on any existing Chaos Warriors.
  • 3c was based on CH2 MIGHTY ZOG ARKWRIGHT. the initial sketch has the axe head down like Mr Arkwright before being changed to head up.
  • I postulate the 1b mini-Slambo was the prototype which is why the sketch appears on its own in the sketchbook and is not numbered and why it does not figure in the scrapbook selection.
