Originally known as Space Dwarfs, this range was a short lived one. The 1991 Blue Catalogue was the last listing - by the time the 1995/6 catalogue was issued, the 40K range had disappeared entirely and the squat race only lived on in the Epic range.

In presenting the guide, so far as possible, the figures are shown in chronological order of release. Where a figure was included in the 1991 Blue catalogue, the reference is shown with the figure.

== Command ==
 +
 +
The command figures first appeared in the Rogue Trader Part One Flyer and then in the January 1988 Flyer and White Dwarf 97. All these figures continued through to the 1989 Catalogue and then to the 1991 Blus Catalogue.
 +
 +
By the time the 1991 Blue Catalogue was issued, there had been some changes in designation. The original officers had become champions and vice versa although the tabs still indicated the original designation.

== Thudd Gun ==
 +
 +
The Squat Thudd Gun was released as part of the Imperial Army range in the Rogue Trader Part Three Flyer. It then appeared in White Dwarf 101. It was omitted from the 1988 and 1989  catalogues but appeared in the 1991 Blue Catalogue.
 +
 +
The alternative version of the Thudd Gun, often known as the Agmat version, does not seem to have been supplied with the Squat gunner but rather with a crew of IG troopers only. For that reason it is not included here.

== Chaos Squats ==

 +
These appeared in White Dwarf 113 and then in the 1991 Blue Catalogue. The 1991 Catalogue states the Chaos Squats in power armour were supplied with the plastic chaos backpack. There were two different plastic backpacks available at the time, a "thin" and a "fat", and they were supplied randomly, although the "fat" version seems rarer than the "thin".  Examples have also been sighted with the metal backpack.

Latest revision as of 17:29, 3 January 2020

This guide owes a lot to the excellent Squat Checklist prepared by Steve Painter. Thanks Steve.

Where a figure was included in the 1988, 1989 and/or the 1991 Blue Catalogues, the references are shown.

First Release

A space dwarf was included in the first 40K releases, as shown in the May 1987 flyer. The figure then appeared in the Rogue Trader Part One Flyer as part of the Mercenaries range and in the 1988 Cataogue (still as a mercenary).

Rogue Trader RT301 Space Dwarfs

This range first appeared in the Thank You Mr President Flyer in September 1987 and then shortly thereafter in the Book of the Astronomican, White Dwarf 94 and the Rogue Trader Part One Flyer. Although the full range still appeared in the 1989 Catalogue, by the time the 1991 Blue Catalogue was issued, only 8 remained.

It should be noted that Roth Bergmann, Owen Garand and Gatt Gunslinger were originally issued with separate back packs. By 1991, Owen Garand and Gatt Gunslinger had been redesigned to have backpacks integral to the figure.

Nambu Arisaka was named Nambu Kalashnikov initially but the name changed by the time the next listing appeared.

Mole Mortar

The Mole Mortar first appeared in the Book of the Astronomican. It then appeared in the 1988 Catalogue as part of the Imperial Army and was continued as such in the 1991 Blue Catalogue.

Iron Claw Limited Edition Squat Hover Car

This figure only appeared in the Winter 1987 and Rogue Trader Part One Flyers

Heavy Weapons

These were first shown in the Winter 1987 Flyer and also appeared in the Rogue Trader Part One Flyer and White Dwarf 97. Surprisingly, none were shown in the 1988 or 1989 Catalogues but all figures did appear in the 1991 Blue catalogue.

The three original heavy weapons had been replaced by four new designs in the 1991 Blue catalogue.

Command

The command figures first appeared in the Rogue Trader Part One Flyer and then in the January 1988 Flyer and White Dwarf 97. All these figures continued through to the 1989 Catalogue and then to the 1991 Blus Catalogue.

By the time the 1991 Blue Catalogue was issued, there had been some changes in designation. The original officers had become champions and vice versa although the tabs still indicated the original designation.

Miner & Engineer - Adventurers Range

The squat miner and engineer were released as part of the Adventurers range first shown in the Rogue Trader Part Two Flyer and then in White Dwarf 99. They appeared in the 1988 Catalogue but had been discontinued before the release of the 1991 Blue Catalogue.

Iron Claw Squats - First Release

Most of this range appreared in the Rogue Trader Part Two Flyer with the full range appearing in White Dwarf 100. Sadly, only one made it through to the 1991 Blue Catalogue.

Medics

The medics were released along with Space Marine and Imperial Army Medics in the Rogue Trader Part Three Flyer, followed by the June 1988 Flyer. They then appeared in the 1988 Catalogue and the 1991 Blue Catalogue.

Thudd Gun

The Squat Thudd Gun was released as part of the Imperial Army range in the Rogue Trader Part Three Flyer. It then appeared in White Dwarf 101. It was omitted from the 1988 and 1989 catalogues but appeared in the 1991 Blue Catalogue.

The alternative version of the Thudd Gun, often known as the Agmat version, does not seem to have been supplied with the Squat gunner but rather with a crew of IG troopers only. For that reason it is not included here.

Plastic Sprues

Bikes, Trikes and Riders

The bikes, trikes and riders first appeared in the Summer 1988 Flyer, followed by White Dwarf 103 and the 1989 Catalogue. They appeared in the 1991 Blue Catalogue.

The bikes and trikes used common components which enabled variants to be built.

Bike: The bike was built using the front wheels, chassis, bike rear wheel and either the headlamps or the headlamps with bolters.

Bike with sidecar: The bike with sidecar was built using front wheels, chassis, bike rear wheel, sidecar, sidecar wheel, Living Ancestor passenger and either the headlamps or the headlamps with bolters.

Trike: The trike was built using front wheels, chassis, either two of the trike rear wheels or two of the sidecar wheels and either the headlamps or the headlamps with bolters.

Heavy Weapon Trike: The heavy weapon trike was built using front wheels, heavy weapon trike chassis, swivel mounted multimelta, two of the trike rear wheels and either the headlamps or the headlamps with bolters.

Riders

The riders were supplied with the plastic arm sprue and the plastic weapon sprue.

Iron Claw Squats - Second Release

These first appeared in White Dwarf 108. All this range were also in the 1989 Catalogue. Some were dropped before the 1991 Blue Catalogue.

Squats with plastic arms

These figures appeared in the 1989 Catalogue and then in the 1991 Blue Catalogue.

These were supplied with the plastic arm sprue and the plastic weapon sprue.

Adeptus Mechanicus

Chaos Exo-armour Squats

Exo-armour Trike: Any of the exo-armour squats could be fitted to the trike.

Adventurers

These appeared in White Dwarf 113 and then all but one appeared in the 1991 Blue Catalogue.

These were supplied with the plastic arm sprue and the plastic weapon sprue.

Chaos Squats

These appeared in White Dwarf 113 and then in the 1991 Blue Catalogue. The 1991 Catalogue states the Chaos Squats in power armour were supplied with the plastic chaos backpack. There were two different plastic backpacks available at the time, a "thin" and a "fat", and they were supplied randomly, although the "fat" version seems rarer than the "thin". Examples have also been sighted with the metal backpack.

Mark II Bike

This only appeared in White Dwarf 149

Uncatalogued Pirates

These do not appear in any of the catalogues although they were available in both UK and USA

Unreleased

This figure was apparently one of a number of trial sculpts prepared by Kev White.

These 8 figures were apparently designed for 2nd Edition 40K but the squat race was withdrawn prior to their release.

Epic

The various termites and moles are not included in the section as they were issued as part of the Imperial Guard forces, not as part of the Squats.
